The Art of the Headshot

Preparing to Look Your Best

Part 1: The "What to Wear" Guide

The goal is to frame your face, not distract from it.

1. Colors & Tones

  • Solid Choices: Deep jewel tones (emerald, navy, plum) and mid-tones generally look best on everyone.

  • Neutral Territory: Greys, chocolate, and beige are timeless and professional.

  • The "Pop": If you have blue or green eyes, wearing a similar shade can make them stand out on camera.

  • Avoid: High-contrast patterns, neon colors, or busy "pinstripe" textures (which can cause a shimmering effect on digital screens called moiré).

2. Fit & Fabric

  • The Fit: Clothes should be tailored. A baggy suit or a loose blouse will look twice as large on camera.

  • Ironing is Key: High-resolution lenses catch every wrinkle. Please ensure your outfits are steamed or pressed.

  • Necklines: * V-necks elongate the neck.

    • Crew necks provide a classic, approachable look.

    • Collars should be crisp; avoid "button-down" collars that tend to curl.

3. Accessories

  • Keep it Simple: Jewelry should be minimal unless your personal brand is "bold."

  • Glasses: If you wear them every day, wear them for your shoot. If possible, bring a pair with non-reflective coating or remove the lenses to avoid glare.

Part 2: The Prep Guide

How to show up as the best version of yourself.

24 Hours Before

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water. It plumps the skin and reduces dark circles.

  • Rest: Aim for a full 8 hours. "Photoshop" can fix a blemish, but it’s hard to fake a "rested" look in the eyes.

  • Grooming: * Hair: Don't try a brand-new haircut the day before. Stick to what you know works.

  • Facial Hair: Clean up any stray hairs. If you want a "stubble" look, trim it to an even length.

Morning Of

  • Moisturize: Apply moisturizer early so it has time to sink in and doesn't leave your skin looking "greasy" under studio lights.

  • Makeup: Stick to "Natural Plus." Aim for one level up from your everyday look. Bring powder or blotting papers to manage shine.

  • Lips: Use a lip balm. Dry, cracked lips are difficult to retouch effectively.

During the Session

  • The Mindset: Relax! My job is to guide your posing and find your angles.

  • Music: I usually have a playlist going, but feel free to suggest a genre that helps you feel confident.

Quick Tip: Bring your clothes on hangers, not folded in a bag. This keeps them crisp and ready for the lights!
